Sea of Galilee -The ‘Rock of Ants’ structure
‘Rock of Ants’ possible reconstruction of ancient structure http://www.antiquities.org.il
During an underwater survey that was carried out by the MAU south of Magdala, a concentration of ashlar basalt stones, capitals and column drums was discovered.
The finds were scattered around a huge isolated rock termed the ‘Rock of Ants’, which is usually partially submerged (when the lake’s level is –209 to – 211 m) forming a small island situated some 30 m offshore.
During the survey, round niches were identified on the rock, which matched the diameter of the pillars that were found at the foot of the rock. It seems that a structure, which was the origin of all the architectural elements, once stood on the upper part of the rock.
The structure may have been a small shrine, a lighthouse or a pergola.
